Basketball Play - Motion X

Motion X

Kyle Gilreath 10/24/2013

John Calipari's Kentucky Wildcats ran this motion action during the 2013 Final Four. This is a great set that creates movement and ends with a side pick & roll after a quick pin-down. If 2 can turn the corner and beat X4 there is limited help to the rim; the only option being X5 which could lead to an easy pass to 5 if X3 fails to rotate down as well. Basketball Play - 42 Double

42 Double

Kyle Gilreath 10/25/2013

When playing good defensive teams, it can require simultaneous actions to occupy the help and open up more scoring opportunities. The play below gives you several scoring plays to counter any defensive rotations. 1. Screening 4 into the pick & roll with 2 can cause X4 to be late and give 2 a mid-range jumper. 2. If X4 and X2 to caught guarding 2, 4 will be open on the pop/roll as the rest of the help defense is occupied in the weak side screening action. 3. If the defense falls sleep or focuses more on the side pick & roll 3 may be open for the lob. See More

Basketball Play - UCLA Double

UCLA Double

Kyle Gilreath 11/04/2013

This play the Chicago Bulls ran over the weekend versus the 76ers is a very popular one run in the NBA by multiple teams. Frame 1 is the action that the Bulls ran. However, if you have a shooting 4 or decide to UCLA screen with a big instead of a guard, Frame 2 (OPTION 2) is a great tweak to get another scoring option for one of your shooters. Furthermore, with an explosive point guard like Rose, you can also choose to dribble 2 up and have 2 Hawk cut off the post to get your point guard using the side pick & roll instead. See More

Basketball Play - Horns Elevator

Horns Elevator

Kyle Gilreath 12/04/2013

Last night in their buzzer beating loss to the UCONN Huskies, the Florida Gators ran this elevator play to revive their offense in the 2nd half. This is a play that ESPN Analyst Seth Greenberg talked about during the broadcast, breaking down the elevator screen. I drew the 5-1 pick in grey because it does not have to be added but is a nice tweak. In the event you need a 2 in this situation, a quick slip from 5 is also a nice option after setting the screen. Basketball Play - "Rhody"

"Rhody"

Kyle Gilreath 12/06/2013

Halfway through the 2nd half of their loss to UCONN, Florida head coach Billy Donovan called out this play to PG Scottie Wilbekin to get his Gators to run some offense for multiple looks. If you follow the Gators or Coach Donovan, you know he is one of the best at teaching and executing continuity offense. While they frequently run baseline runner/rhody actions, I love this new addition to his playbook. There are multiple scoring opportunities to attack any defensive adjustments in this action. Basketball Play - Zipper Weak 23

Zipper Weak 23

Kyle Gilreath 11/25/2014

Thursday night in their win over the Miami Heat, the Chicago Bulls ran this pick & roll play for Luol Deng to start the game. As 3 comes off the pick, 1 relocates to the corner as 4 and 5 space outside the lane. If the defense shifts to take away the drive, look to fire a pass to 1 in the corner and have your bigs screen in on the defense. See More

Basketball Play - Motion Back Again

Motion Back Again

Kyle Gilreath 12/11/2013

Last night in their win over the Kansas Jayhawks, the Florida Gators ran this half-court set which involved multiple screening actions leading to a middle pick & roll. As 1 came off the pick & roll he was able to find 3 spotting up in the corner. Due to the defensive rotations, this allowed 5 to post-up on the block. See More

Basketball Play - 1 Baseline Hook

1 Baseline Hook

Kyle Gilreath 12/17/2013

This play is an excellent action to run versus a team that is very aggressive guarding pick & rolls. Not only do you force X1 to fight and catch up to the ball handler with the baseline stagger, but screening 5 into the side pick & roll will force X5 to be late as well. With 4 rolling to the rim this takes away your quick stunt help from the top of they key. Basketball Play - 2 Double Roll

2 Double Roll

Kyle Gilreath 12/30/2013

This past week our team was very fortunate to compete in the King of the Bluegrass Holiday Classic outside of Louisville, KY. This tournament is one of the best in the Nation with the best teams in Kentucky in attendance. This action below was one that the #1 team in Kentucky, Ballard High School, ran to post up their Center (who is heading to Butler). See More

Basketball Play - Rhody Up

Rhody Up

Kyle Gilreath 01/06/2014

This week I am going to share a series of plays that begin with rhody cuts. I term a rhody cut a cut from wing to wing above both elbows, usually off a screen or rub from one or both bigs. Some may refer to this action as an Iverson cut. This first action is a simple one without a lot of moment that gives your point guard a rim attack. If X4 of X2 sinks down to prevent the lay-up, look to skip to the opposite corner to 2. See More

Basketball Play - Rhody Triple

Rhody Triple

Kyle Gilreath 01/10/2014

This Rhody play is one of my favorites as it incorporates a ton of movement to put the defense in compromising positions. In Frame 2, as 3 starts attacking the rim, the triple stagger will occupy most (if not all) of the weak side defense as they become concerned with guarding the stagger screen. If 3 cannot get to the rim, look to throwback to 2, or 4/5 slipping to the rim after setting their screens. See More

Basketball Play - Rhody Exchange Up

Rhody Exchange Up

Kyle Gilreath 01/10/2014

The last Rhody play for this weak creates more movement amongst the bigs and results in a middle pick & roll. As 4 uses the screen from 5, 1 should look at 4 for a second as he could be open. However, that is a tough passing angle so more than likely 1 will keep it. (If you want to feed 4, 1 should quickly advance to 3 for a wing post feed). By having 5 set a screen for a player to the rim the goal is to get X5 to help momentarily and cause him to be late on the pick & roll. As a result, you will have three options of a attack: 1. 1 attacking the rim 2. 1 throwing back to 5 at the free-throw line for a jumper 3. X2 helps on penetration and kick to 2 for a shot See More

Basketball Play - "Out"-Carolina/Screen-In

"Out"-Carolina/Screen-In

Kyle Gilreath 01/18/2014

John Pelphrey ran this Carolina backscreen action while the head coach of the University of Arkansas. What I love about this play is by have 2 set the backscreen to 4, a lack of communication will result in one of three outcomes: 1. Lob to 4 2. 2 will be open as X2 helped because X4 was nailed on the backscreen 3. X5 is forced to help on 2 and 5 can flash for an elbow jumper or iso-drive to the rim. If none of those options are available the pick & roll finishes up the play. With the floor spread and the pick so close to the baseline it will be difficult to help on the roll of 5 if X5 is caught helping X2. See More
