Basketball Play - 1v2 Rebounding

1v2 Rebounding

Drew Hanlen 10/22/2014

This is a great drill to get your players to box out on defense and crash and avoid box outs on offense. Too many rebounding drills benefit the taller players and don't truly reward players for boxing out or getting around box outs, so this drill is perfect to reward pursuit effort. See More

Basketball Play - Husky Zone Set

Husky Zone Set

Michael Bowden 01/31/2013

This is a nice zone set from the 2008-2009 season from the Uconn vs. Gonzaga game in late December. This is a very nice set to get your main post player an isolation on the block. The double high ball screens also allow your guards to get penetration and kicks as well. See More

Basketball Play - Get Open Drill

Get Open Drill

Drew Hanlen 10/09/2014

This is a great drill to work on screening, using screens, passing and catching! Set Up: Ball handler will start with the ball at the top of the key and will be pressured by an on-ball defender, while another offensive player will start under the rim with a defender in full denial. Two all-time screeners will start just outside each second hash mark. Step 1: Offensive player under the rim will try to free themselves from their defender by using the screeners in any way that they want (curl, pop, fade, wiggle, etc), while their defender will try to deny them from receiving a pass from the ball handler. Step 2: If the offensive player frees themselves from their defender, the ball handler will complete a pass to them. After passing the ball, the original ball handler will make a basket cut to the rim, while the offensive player that received the ball will dribble the ball to the top of the key. The offensive team will try to complete eight catches in a row, while the defenders try to get a steal or force a turnover. Ball handler can be called for a five-second violation. Additional Info: If the offensive players successfully complete eight catches in a row, they will become the next screeners, the defenders will stay on defense and the screeners will move to offense. If the defenders get a steal or force a turnover, they will become the next screeners, the offensive players will move to defense and the screeners will move to offense. Basketball Play - Connecticut Sun Zone Offense

Connecticut Sun Zone Offense

Daniel Murphy 04/22/2013

This play was run by the Connecticut Sun in the 20012 season. It's a great set against a 2-3 to get your playmaker some space on the wing to shoot or drive against the zone. If you can get the timing of frame 4 and frame 5 down it will really give some time and space to your play maker to attack the zone. See More

1-3-1 Zone Set Play

Dana Beszczynski 05/30/2015

John Beilein had a masterful game plan against the Syracuse 2-3 Zone and here is another example of moving players and the ball to get the best possible shot The Orangemen were consistently spread out by the passing of the Wolverines and had their fair share of open looks There were also many secondary options off the sets which created match-up problems for the vaunted Syracuse Zone Defense of Jim Boeheim See More

Basketball Play - Maryland Women: Floppy Post Iso

Maryland Women: Floppy Post Iso

Michael Bowden 02/27/2012

Alyssa Thomas had 20 points and 14 rebounds, and the sixth-ranked Terrapins established command soon after the opening tip in an 84-64 rout Friday night. Alicia DeVaughn scored 14 and Laurin Mincy had 13 for the Terrapins, who never trailed after yielding the game's first point. Maryland led 11-1 after 4 minutes, 53-29 at halftime and 73-40 with 10 minutes to go. Last month, Maryland needed overtime to squeeze out a 78-72 win at North Carolina. This time, the outcome was apparent almost immediately. "We were really able to dominate right away," Terps coach Brenda Frese said. "I thought we came with the knockout punch early that they were never able to recover from." The victory pushed the Terrapins into a third-place tie with Georgia Tech in the Atlantic Coast Conference, although Maryland (24-4, 11-4) gets the tiebreaker by virtue of its sweep of the Yellow Jackets. The top four teams receive a first-round bye in next week's ACC tournament. After beating Duke and North Carolina in the span of six days, the Terrapins are riding a hot streak at just the right time. "This is how you want to finish," Frese said. "You want to be peaking come March, and this is where this team is at." Next, the Terrapins will close out the regular season Sunday with a 2 p.m. game at NC State (16-13, 5-10) in Raleigh, N.C. The Terps will head to Greensboro, N.C. next week for the ACC Women's Basketball Tournament, which begins Thursday. Their seeding, game time and opponent will be announced later this weekend or early next week. Check umterps.com for the latest information. This play, from the Maryland FastDraw playbook, isolates a post using a variety of screens.  The video below shows Long Beach State University's men's team executing the play in a game situation: See More

Basketball Play - 4 vs 3 No Threes

4 vs 3 No Threes

Randy Brown 12/15/2014

In my college experiences I've worked with some of the best defensive coaches in the business; Tim Floyd, Kevin O'Neill, Larry Eustachy, and Gary Garner. Each of them ran tough, competitive practices with demanding drills. Here is one that will really help your half court defense. Getting to three point shooters is important to a solid half court defense. This diagrammed drill is based on getting to the shooting and taking away the open three. It demands great communication, rotation, anticipation, closing out, being there on the catch, vision, blocking out and rebounding with two hands. If three defenders can successfully defend four players in this drill then your game time defense will shut down any opponent's three point shooting. DEFENSIVE RULES: 1. Must be there on the catch by offense 2. Ball pressure at all times 3. Communication entire possession 4. Two non-on ball defenders protect basket and lay ups 5. Secure rebound with two hands Getting to three point shooters is important to a solid half court defense. DRILL OPTIONS: 1. When does drill end? You can designate the number of passes, the number of threes taken away, or time. 2. If you set conditions and a defender or defenders violates it, you start possession over. 3. Conditions could include being there on the catch, hand up on closeout, communication re: who has ball, vision, three block outs, rebound the ball with two hands. 4. Can use this as a three man drill or a team drill; i.e.-8 players white and 3 players red. See More

Basketball Play - X - America's Play 2012-13

X - America's Play 2012-13

Michael Bowden 01/17/2013

There is a new "America's Play" for the season of 2012-13. This set has been growing in frequency all season long. This is such a simple set to put in if you have either a dominant post player or a knock down shooter. The set can also flow into an on ball screen offense or a 2 man game. We have seen this set from UVA, UNC, Towson, Delaware, St. Joes, George Mason, Hartford, FSU, Brown and Virginia Tech. This shows you that all difference conferences with different offensive philosophies are running this set to get a quality shot. The video attached shows you the different alignments you can start the set with from a 1-4 high, Pinch, Box, or even starting with a guard over/under movement (Iverson cut). See More

Tug Motion

Justin Scanson 01/22/2015

The key to this zone offense is to get your baseline runner to buy in to the idea of crossing the lane on high post entry. I hope you like it and I hope that teams don't immediately change to man defense when you start getting layups! See More

Basketball Play - Cutters vs Zone

Cutters vs Zone

Kyle Gilreath 11/14/2013

This is a great set to run out of the read and react set. The object is to get your players cutting into the gaps of the zone before popping/moving to their spots around the perimeter. Make sure you teach your players to pass fake to cutters to shift the defense and help open up the gaps. See More

Basketball Play - Block Out Close Out Drill

Block Out Close Out Drill

Randy Brown 12/15/2014

In this competitive defensive drill, a combination of skills are on display. Defender must execute the following skills; vision, floor position, block out, rebounding with two hands, anticipation, close out, one on one defense. Many different options can be incorporated into this drill. It can also serve as a great conditioner. It can be run as an individual or team competitive drill. See More

Basketball Play - 4 High Zone

4 High Zone

Justin Scanson 01/22/2015

This is a fantastic zone offense that can be run at all levels. It is the perfect "First Zone Offense" to be taught at the middle school or sub varsity level with easy setup and rules. There is also enough options that more advanced levels of basketball would see success with this offense. Options/Variations From 1-4 set, high post entry. Look for the post that did not receive the entry to dive to the basket. This is hard to guard at all levels. From the wing with posts at short corner/high post, high post entry. Look for the post at the short corner to cut across the lane to the opposite block. From the wing with posts at short corner/high post, skip pass. Posts can X cut or straight cut. See More

Stars Zone Offense

Matt Monroe 08/08/2014

Best used vs. 2-3 or 2-1-2 zone #1 passes the ball to #2 #1 cuts through the lane to the ballside corner, #4 flashes high #3 cuts to the nail and then pops up, #2 passes to #3, #4 dumps back down to the block, #2 makes a shallow cut through the lane, #1 fills #2's spot.......Offense reloads on a reversal See More
