Basketball Play - Toledo Rockets - Horns Floppy: Double Stagger Counter

Toledo Rockets - Horns Floppy: Double Stagger Counter

Dave Nedbalek 08/27/2018

This is a counter from the base action I diagramed entitled, "Toledo Rockets - Horns Floppy." This is a very simple yet effective counter you can run with this set. The video below is not of this set itselft, but the base horns floppy action. 5 will attempt to bury defender as 2 comes off screen. While this is happening, 1 and 4 set a double stagger screen away for 3 in the corner. This is a great time for several things: 1) 5 in a post isolation situation while help side is working through the stagger. 2) Obviously a 3pt opportunity for 3 if you have a 5 that garners a lot of attention. 3) While the stagger is occuring, if 5 were to sprint into a side ball screen for 2, that would leave 2 a wide open driving line off of a reject of 5's screen. Basketball Play - Run Out Shooting 1v1

Run Out Shooting 1v1

Michael Shaughnessy 08/27/2018

Having players that can knock down shots is obviously a huge advantage for any team. The more players a team has that are high percentage shooters, the better that team will be on the offensive end of the floor. It's not just about making the shots when they are wide open, but also being able to make shots without being distracted by a defender attempting to run a shooter off the 3pt line. This drill is a great way to add that defensive element to make your shooting drills more game-like for players. Emphasize focus on the basket and not thinking twice with a defender closing out. Basketball Play - Toledo Rockets - Horns Floppy: Spain SPNR Counter

Toledo Rockets - Horns Floppy: Spain SPNR Counter

Dave Nedbalek 08/26/2018

This is a counter from the base action I diagramed entitled, "Toledo Horns Floppy." This is a very simple yet effective counter you can run with this set. The vide below is not of this set itselft, but the base Horns Floppy action. As 2 comes off of 5's floppy screen, 4 will hit 2 and sprint straight into a side pick and roll. 2 will hunt the nail pulling the ball two bounces away from the screen looking to get in the paint with a scoring mindset first. As 4 rolls to the rim 5 will set a back screen on the defender in ball screen coverage. I worded that carefully to account for the likelihood of a switch. Screen the defender that is in ball screen coverage. After setting the back screen, 5 will pop to recover spacing/get outside of the 3pt line. This is a deadly action if you have a 5 who can step out and shoot it. 2's reads: 1) score 2) Lob/pass to 4 rolling 3) 5 popping It goes without saying that if the weak side defense hugs in, then 2 would kickout to 1, or 3 holding the side ready to shoot. Basketball Play - Toledo Rockets - Horns Floppy

Toledo Rockets - Horns Floppy

Dave Nedbalek 08/26/2018

The University of Toledo men's team runs some phenomenal action under Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk. They are one of the most "set-driven" teams in the country. Out of 1,640 FGA in the 2017-2018 season, only 196 were in transition. This diagram isn't 100% accurate to the formation/timing of the video clip below, but you can easlily see where my adaptations come from. I generally like to allow clips or actions to get my creativity flowing. When I see initial action that I really like, I will often build a 'series' of sets around that particular action. Check out my counters of this action: Horns Floppy: Spain PNR Counter Horns Floppy: Double Stagger Counter This is a great set with some very quick decisions to be made by the defense. As you can see the end of result of this set is not a basket, and to be honest it isn't particulary great execution or spacing, but you can most certainly see the potential of this set. I am a huge fan of the floppy action, not so much for the guard coming off, but for the great sealing position the screener should be in. These are great opportunities to screen with bigger guards that can exploit mismatches as well. Click here for more plays by Dave Nedbalek! See More

Basketball Play - Atlanta Hawks - Loop Oklahoma

Atlanta Hawks - Loop Oklahoma

Ryan Nguyen 08/24/2018

Budenholzer ran this "Loop" set last year with the Atlanta Hawks to create an open 3 for a stretch big. The action starts off with a pin down into a loop cut across the elbow by the PG/1. As 1 completes cut, 5 immediately turns and sets a ball screen for 2. 5 then rolls into a pin down for 4 who comes off the screen looking for a shot. Offense creates a 3-on-2 advantage on the weak side as the ball handler occupies the screener's defender. See More

Basketball Play - Go Gets: Shot, Go, Pass

Go Gets: Shot, Go, Pass

Michael Shaughnessy 08/21/2018

Here is a progression to my last post call "Go Gets". This drill adds in verbal or non-verbal communication forcing the players to be shot ready before catching the ball and have to react quickly within sustaining the correct habits. This also adds different actions working on passing and re-spacing on kick outs into different actions. It's a great way to have fun and challenge your players through just playing basketball (pass, move, drive, finish, shoot).
