Basketball Play - Atlanta "45" Series

Atlanta "45" Series

Daniel Murphy 06/27/2013

Another series Atlanta ran in their win over the Sun on 6/23. The set begins with a simple cross screen and from there the ball can go inside or outside. The key to the play is Atlanta has a versitile Olympian at the 4. She's a 6'1 guard/forward who can finish inside, shoot the three or drive the ball to the basket. The cross screen-rip screen post iso was an effective way to get the ball in the post. See More

Basketball Play - Pacer Deny Action

Pacer Deny Action

Kevin Bruinsma 06/14/2013

A common screen the screener set ran by a lot of High School, College, and NBA teams was used by the Indiana Pacers against the Miami Heat. As you will see in most of Indiana's play sets they run a lot of stuff for their 3 man, #24 Paul George. Here they use George to set the back screen for the post before he runs off 5's screen for a wing catch. He has the option to shoot, drive, or dump it inside to the posting #55 Roy Hibbert. See More

Basketball Play - NBA Play of the Day June 14: Miami Heat Hook Double

NBA Play of the Day June 14: Miami Heat Hook Double

Kyle Gilreath 06/14/2013

The Miami Heat ran this two plays back to back last in during Game 4 of the NBA Finals versus the San Antonio Spurs. A trend in the NBA that I love and many coaches don't follow (which I don't understand why) is running plays that work in succession. If a play works well once, why not try it again and make your opponent guard it? That is what the Miami Heat did last night, Option 1 was a quick pin down for Ray Allen which led to an easy floater in the lane. The very next possession down the court the Heat ran the same action but the Spurs did a much better job defending and the Heat had to deviate to a different play. See More

Basketball Play - Miami Heat Horns Twist Low

Miami Heat Horns Twist Low

Kyle Gilreath 06/10/2013

The Miami Heat ran this play midway through the 1st quarter of Game 2 of the 2013 NBA Finals verus the San Antonio Spurs. Setting two different angled screens is very effective, especially when the opponent is flat hedging the screens. Further more, setting the screens lower and lower also makes it more difficult to guard because make the rotations off of shooters to help much longer. See More

Basketball Play - Horns Twist

Horns Twist

Kyle Gilreath 06/07/2013

During Game 1 of the 2013 NBA Finals, the Miami Heat ran this play versus the San Antonio Spurs after a timeout in the 2nd quarter. Placing 3 capable scorers (Wade, Cole, Battier) into a screen the screener pick & roll action is very hard to guard because the defense did not want to over-help and give up an easy look. See More

Basketball Play - NBA Play of the Day June 3: Indiana Pacers Zipper Power

NBA Play of the Day June 3: Indiana Pacers Zipper Power

Kyle Gilreath 06/03/2013

The Indiana Pacers ran this Sideline Out of Bounds play on Saturday during Game 6 of the ECF versus the Miami Heat. I drew up several zipper actions from the Pacers last week and this ending is great to get your big posted up on the block with limited help. If the defense decides to double on the catch or earlier, you have 2 coming off a a pin-down or 4 slipping to the rim as options. See More

Basketball Play - Spurs Triple

Spurs Triple

Daniel Murphy 06/01/2013

The Spurs ran this at the 7:15 mark in the first quarter of their 104-93 game 3 win over Memphis. This is one of my favorite sets the Spurs run and it is very difficult to guard because the defender has to run off three screens and there are a variety of counters to each defensive adjustment. Often the 2 man comes offf 5's zipper screen but in this situation, 2 just cut to the top and 5 set the first of three screens. This play demonstrates just one option and read of many possibilities. The ending to this play was great because Memphis trapped the ball screen, Paker hit the pop man Duncan and then Duncan hit Paker on the backdoor cut. The unselfish ball movement by the Spurs is a great part of their offense. See More

Basketball Play - EC Game 1 Winner

EC Game 1 Winner

Jacob Collins 05/29/2013

Incredible set by Coach Spo. Has a great floor spacing lineup with 4 shooters plus LeBron. This action has everyone moving and because of their offesnive game they all have to be guarded. This allows LeBron to get open on the left side lane extended. He then can drive an kick to anyone on the floor but he takes advantage of his spacing to score a layup. Incredible Set. 1-Norris Cole, 2-Ray Allen, LBJ-LeBron James, 4-Shane Battier, 5- Chris Bosh. See More

Basketball Play - NBA Play of the Day May 27: San Antonio Spurs EOG

NBA Play of the Day May 27: San Antonio Spurs EOG

Daniel Murphy 05/27/2013

With the game tied 85-85 and 3.3 seconds left on the clock the Spurs ran this sideline out of bounds play in their 93-89 game 2 OT win over Memphis. Duncan set a great screen to free Manu up, but Leonard was unable to make the pass. Duncan flashed to the ball and shot a contested three but if Leonard hit Manu, Manu would have had great momentum driving to the hoop for the game winner. See More

Basketball Play - UCLA Back

UCLA Back

Kyle Gilreath 05/23/2013

The Indiana Pacers ran this UCLA set in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals versus the Miami Heat. This play gives three scoring options in the UCLA cut, the post up, and the down-screen. The Miami Heat did a very good job guarding this action so the Pacers ended up running a middle ballscreen late in the clock. See More
