Basketball Play - Jerry Sloan Utah Series

Jerry Sloan Utah Series

Timothy Hipps 11/06/2017

"Utah" is a package of four plays based on the 1-4 High Offense utilized by Jerry Sloan during the peak of his tenure with the Utah Jazz. The play begins with a pass and a UCLA cut, often followed by a ballscreen. Ball screens after a UCLA cut are extremely hard to cover as defenders are out of position. Take a look at the base "Utah" play in the video, and see the diagram for 3 other options to go to once a defense attempts adjustments. See More

Basketball Play - Philadelphia 76ers - ATO "Ear Tug"

Philadelphia 76ers - ATO "Ear Tug"

Ryan Nguyen 12/18/2017

The Philadelphia 76ers like to run this "logo" ball screen action for Ben Simmons to prevent defenses from going under. If Simmons is open on the UCLA cut, they'll look to hit for a quick layup. If the layup is not available, 5 will set a flare screen for 2, creating a post split action to prevent defense from digging. See More

Basketball Play - St. Bonaventure - Elbow Flex Pindown

St. Bonaventure - Elbow Flex Pindown

Matt Wheeler 03/14/2018

St. Bonaventure ran this multiple action play to get a game tying dunk in the first half of their NCAA Tournament game against UCLA. The Bonnies started in an Elbow set and ran a flex action getting 1 the ball back up top. This isolated the left side of the floor for 4 to set the pindown screen for 2. Once 2 received the pass from 1, 4 slipped the screen and cut to the basket. 2 found him for a wide open dunk.. See More

Basketball Play - UCLA Bruins - Baseline Runner (Zone)

UCLA Bruins - Baseline Runner (Zone)

Matt Wheeler 03/14/2018

UCLA ran this concept-based zone offense in their First Four matchup against St. Bonaventure, putting their best player (1) on the baseline and giving him different options to cut behind the zone. When the ball gets to a side one of the post players cuts to the high post and the other one stays low. This overloads the offense, putting 4 offensive players against 3 defensive players in the zone. When the ball is reversed up top, 1 has options to run the baseline or flash to the high post. If 1 receives the ball in the high post, 4 and 5 seal their defenders looking for a pass to the rim. 2 and 3 flatten out to the wings to create a better passing angle for a kickout three point shot. Basketball Play - Houston Cougars - Horns Elbow Brush ISO

Houston Cougars - Horns Elbow Brush ISO

Dave Nedbalek 03/21/2018

The University of Houston runs an incredibly effective offense. This set is designed to get a mismatch and the ball in space with shooters surrounding him. Michigan switched this defensively, which for most teams in the country a 1 to 5 or 1 to 4 ball screen would present serious mismatch problems. If defense does not switch, there is either a layup, three, or long closeout to be had. See More

Basketball Play - Michigan Wolverines - Pop Slice Rip

Michigan Wolverines - Pop Slice Rip

Dave Nedbalek 03/27/2018

Don't be fooled but the lack of "success" of these set plays in the video clip below. The coaching staffs in post-season play are so well scouted and the teams are elite in preperation that oftentimes the desired shot is not available. Nonetheles, the analytics surrounding side changes and paint touches remains true, as they break the defense down with each action. This set presents several shot opportunities, and the spacing is so phenoenal that however the defense plays it, there will be scoring options with the advantage created. See More
